The photo above has nothing to do with the post below . . . just a shot of a powder day on May 23!
Nucleation in Bend
Now that Bend Oregon has assumed the nickname “Beervana,” been named one of the the “Top Beer Towns in America,” and made the “Cyclepub”
and “Ale Trail” almost household names, it’s only natural that the quest for the perfect IPA glass also pass through Bend.
“Unusual”
The perfect glass, created by Spiegelau, has been designed not to just “highlight and IPA’s flavor, but also its florid, piney, citrus-heavy aroma.” It has been described as “unusual.”
“You Drink what You Smell”
Connoisseurs of IPA (and there are many in Bend) know that the link between aroma and taste is crucial, and that drinking a robust IPA out of a traditional pint glass is like “drinking out of a bucket.”
Shape is Important
The shape of Spiegelau’s glass allows for an ideal pour . . . to put it bluntly, “short of a gulp, but more than a poofty sip.” The snifter-like top serves as an “olfactory cannon,” while the glass’s lower ridges aerate the beer in the motion of the flow . . . sounds technical; makes me thirsty too!
Nucleation
I’m a guy who likes PBR tallboys (like the rest of the snowboarders),
but have been schooled in the delights of IBU’s and higher alcoholic content beers. I’ve therefore been excited about the phenomena of “nucleation.”
The new IPA glasses should find their way to Bend stores by mid June.
