Bite of Bend
While the Incas picked the solstice to mark their Inti Raymi, The Festival of the Sun, denizens of Central Oregon used the longest day of the year to munch through the “Bite of Bend.”
More than 20,000 hearty souls, battling slightly inclimate (cool and blustery) weather, left their homes in Bend to partake in the 7th. annual festival. Sponsored by Sterling Savings Bank, and billed as an effort to “celebrate the local culture and food of the region,” the Bite of Bend was a great opportunity to mingle with the crowd and eat too much!
A section of downtown Bend Oregon was cordoned off and closed to traffic. Food booths were then set up. Vendors offered scrumptious bite-sized portions for $1; no meal was more than $6.
Aside from the yummy eats, the “Bite of Bend” also presented a full spate of mostly local and very eclectic free entertainment, with live music featuring:
- Bill Keale
- Michelle Van Handel
- Deco Moon Jazz
- The Anvil Blasters
- The Erins
- David Bowers Colony
- Dusty Rhodes and the River Band
- Fireflyte
- Shireen Amini
- Old Wave
- River Pigs
- Empty Space Orchestra
- Taarka
Also included in the Bite of Bend was a children’s area and a beer garden. Top level competitions decided a best chef and outstanding bartender.
When it was over, a sated crowd had a chance to wander through Drake Park,
along the Deschutes River, into some of the historic neighborhoods,
past some of the older homes in Bend Oregon.
All the while, thinking that this isn’t a bad place to live.
